Key Differences Between The SoClean & Lumin
Hello everyone, this is John with AffinityHM. Today's blog will discuss the key differences between the Lumin and the SoClean. By going over these differences, I hope to inform you and to help you make a decision on which CPAP cleaner will work best for you. Let me begin by discussing the mechanism of action by which each machine cleans.
Lets start off with the Lumin. The Lumin sanitizes by using a powerful UV light bulb that inactivates micro-organisms, which include bacteria and viruses. Once these organisms are inactivated, they can no longer spread or grow. One of the advantages of using UV light is the quick and efficient time to clean. In less than five minutes, the Lumin will clean your CPAP mask and hose.
Now that you are aware of how Lumin cleans, lets discuss SoClean and its sanitation process
SoClean uses ozone as a disinfectant. The ozone that is produced breaks down the cell wall of bacteria and other harmful pathogens which destroys them within. Compared to the Lumin, this cleaning process takes about two more hours than the Lumin.
While both of these machines are effective at sanitizing your CPAP equipment, there are some other factors to consider.
The first factor is in regards to the ozone created by the SoClean. While it is stated that ozone is safe for disinfecting purposes, some patients may find that they may be sensitive to the odor that lingers after a cleaning cycle. After the two hour cleaning cycle, the ozone will dissipate, however it will leave a slight odor. If you are keen to certain smells you may find it irritating to breath in after cleaning. It must be noted that most of the smell can be eliminated by running your CPAP for 5-10 minutes before use to blow away the smell. On the other hand, the Lumin is also known to have a lingering smell, but this can be prevented by cleaning any debris from your mask before hand. Despite these issues and my personal experiences, this issue is not a deal breaker for most.
Now that I've covered this factor, I'd like to move on to my next point which is compatibility.
The SoClean does a great job at making this machine compatible with almost every CPAP. They have multiple adapters that can be attached to your CPAP so that the ozone can clean travel into the water chamber in order to sanitize.Like the SoClean, the Lumin is designed to be compatible with most CPAP masks and water chambers. While there are no adapters for the machine, most CPAP mask and water chambers can be stored into the slide out drawer where the cleaning process takes place.Contrary to the SoClean, the Lumin requires you to purchase a separate device for cleaning your CPAP hose. That device is called the Lumin Bullet and as far as compatibilty goes, the Lumin bullet will only work with standard CPAP hoses, Therefore, if you have a climate line or heated CPAP hose, it will not be compatible.
This wraps up my key differences between these machines.
Hopefully, this blog has given you some insight into which CPAP cleaner is best for you. I will link some videos below where Chris goes into some detail about each unit! Feel free to reach out to us for any questions. Thanks for reading!
